Ski area
The off-piste skiing is varied and challenging and with so much
terrain to explore you certainly wont get bored. Some of the
best descents are only accessible with some walking but the rewards
are worth it. Tree skiing at Chamossiere is a particular favourite
as is The Swiss Wall, a steep vertical off piste slope
accessed from the top of the Chavanette lift above Avoriaz. With
Chamonix only 1 hour away there is also the option to spend a day
on the Vallee Blanche or heli-skiing in Courmayeur.
Skills and Stamina
The introductory level clinic is suitable for skiers with less than
2 weeks guided off-piste skiing.
Participants need to be competent on-piste, capable of skiing linked
turns on red runs under all conditions.
We take great care to ensure compatibility of our groups. If you
are uncertain of your level, you should contact us to help us pick
the best level for you.
Ski programme
The principal aims of this week are:
To provide first class guiding and instruction from professional,
friendly Ski Instructors and Mountain Guides to improve off piste
skiing technique.
To give practical mountain awareness training on the hazards
and risks associated with skiing off-piste particularly for avalanches.
To provide the opportunity to ski the best off piste in
the Portes du Soleil region.
The week is intended to be fun with lots of thrilling skiing but
always directed with maximum attention to your safety and the safety
of others.
Itineraries vary depending on the composition of the group and the
weather and snow conditions.
Arriving in resort
You should aim to arrive at the chalet sometime in the afternoon.
If you are going to arrive before 2pm or after 7pm please contact
us as there will be an initial briefing with your Mountain Tracks
guide on the first evening. This is an opportunity to meet the guide
and the rest of the party, to discuss the plans and objectives for
the week and to ask any questions you may have relating to the week.
Safety awareness & training
Adventurous activities in the mountains have their dangers. These
can never be removed altogether but they can be minimised. At Mountain
Tracks we don't just blindly get you to follow our experienced leaders.
We give you the opportunity to learn mountaincraft skills and understand
about the hazards, how to minimise the risk, and how to cope with
incidents should they happen.
Equipment
A copy of our recommended kit list will be sent to you at the time
of booking.
Standard downhill skis and boots are suitable for our beginner-level
weeks.
Safety equipment: everyone is expected to ski at all times with
the three essential items of avalanche safety equipment; transceiver,
shovel and probe. If you ski off-piste regularly we recommend you
purchase your own set.
We use and recommend the DTS Tracker and can offer you these at
a discounted rate. Alternatively this equipment can be hired from
your instructor and the cost is £40 per set for the week.
Please ask us for details at the time of booking.
The guides and instructors
Introductory weeks will be run mostly by Ski Instructors focusing
on off-piste instruction and mountain awareness.
The guides are chosen for their friendly personalities and passion
for their sport as well as their expertise and knowledge as mountain
professionals. They will ensure you have a highly rewarding and
enjoyable week.
Insurance
It is a condition of booking that you are insured for off-piste
skiing covering personal accident, rescue and third party risks.
You are strongly advised also to take out cover against cancellation
and curtailment. Mountain Tracks can arrange this for you and the
cost for a 9-day policy for this week will be £39 per person.
Contact us for further details.
